Meet the Characters

Ryan is the narrator of this story. He's in his late twenties, University educated, with no real direction to his career. He's worked for three different companies since he graduated and in each situation he moved for one simple reason- to make more money.

This blind pursuit of money has lead Ryan into a very difficult and career threatening position with a large retailer that he didn't see coming. The fact that the company is losing money is the least of his problems. It's the tyrant who runs the place, the one who is making life a living hell for everyone, that's the real problem.

Ryan's first instinct is to pick-up and run; to get as far away from the problem as possible, and leave his co-workers to fend for themselves. But something tells Ryan that it's time to take a stand- that it's time to be that 'someone' who everyone is looking for to make a difference. The only problem is he doesn't know what to do. He's never been in this kind of situation before. He needs help!

Sarah and Ryan have been friends since high school. Instead of going to College or University, Sarah traveled the world for a few years after high school, and then settled down in California for five years where she worked for a variety of not-for-profit organizations focusing on environmental issues.

Sarah has a burning desire to make a difference, to be Anything but Ordinary. To this end she's developed a radical new business paradigm that she calls "environmental capitalism." In order to make this idea a reality she has to overcome a number of obstacles, the most significant being her own lack of confidence and her inability to stand up for herself and her ideas.

Darren is two years older than Ryan and Sarah and works for an advertising and promotions company as a senior account manager. For all of his life things have come extremely easy for Darren. People have high expectations for him, and he has even higher expectations for himself.

Everything is going extremely well for Darren until he's informed that the big promotion he was expecting isn't going to happen. When he asks why, he's told that he lacks the leadership skills that the new position requires. This comes as a huge shock for Darren who always thought he was a great leader.

Darren's initial reaction is to assume that the problem is not his, but his bosses. It's his boss who doesn't understand what being a leader is about. Reluctantly he agrees to tag along with Ryan and Sarah and in the process comes to understand that the problem is really his.
